Slovenian Research Agency co-founds Central European Science Partnership

Vienna, 12 September - Four European agencies for the financing of research, including the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS), have agreed to set up a Central European Science Partnership to promote international cooperation.

A letter of intent for the setting up of the Central European Science Partnership - CEUS was signed in Vienna on Wednesday by ARRS, the Austrian, Czech and Polish research agencies.

Other agencies from the wider Central European region will be able to join CEUS in the future.

A key goal of the partnership is to strengthen research cooperation among research communities of the partner countries through joint approaches to the financing of research, ARRS said in a press release.

According to ARRS head József Györkös, the initiative was based on the geographical proximity of the partners and their joint cultural heritage. The founding members have similar systems of science financing and similar mechanism for evaluation, he noted.

"We are powerful and equal partners striving for circulation of know-how and strengthening of research potential in the region to achieve higher reach in Europe and internationally," Györkös pointed out.

The letter of intent was signed on the sidelines of the BE OPEN - Science & Society Festival held as part of Austria's EU presidency.
