Slovenia supports increase in EU research funding

Ljubljana, 29 May - Slovenia voiced support for increased EU funding of science and research as ministers in charge of research held a videoconference on Friday.

"Reform of all aspects of the European research space will be one of the priorities of the incoming EU presidency trio of Germany, Portugal and Slovenia," Jure Gašparič, state secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, was quoted as saying.

Gašparič stressed that the coronavirus experience was precious in that it reaffirmed the notion that only excellence in knowledge could provide long-term and sustainable answers to humanity's key challenges.

He said investment in science, research and innovation must increase significantly. Without new knowledge and innovative solutions, it will not be possible to achieve clean mobility, food security, energy storage or zero-emission industry, he said.
