Slovenia to host major mathematics event in June

Koper, 26 February - The University of Primorska will host the 8th European Congress of Mathematics (8ECM), one of the major events in the field, in the coastal town of Portorož between 20 and 26 June. The congress will be held mostly online due to the epidemiological situation, said the university.

This year's event will host top experts in the field, including the winners of the Fields Medal or so-called Nobel Prize of Mathematics. Martin Hairer (Imperial College, London), Stanislav Smirnov (University of Geneva) and Andrei Okounkov (Higher School of Economics, National Research University, Moscow) will be among the guests.

Host the event is a great honour to Slovenian mathematicians as well as an opportunity for showcasing their achievements and boosting student interest in maths, the university said.

More than 1,500 mathematicians will present their latest work as part of 60 mini symposiums. The congress will comprise 16 categories with a number of debates and lectures.

The event had been planned for 2020 but was postponed for a year due to the pandemic. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) and 8ECM organisers have decided to go through with the congress this year, however the majority of activities will be held virtually.

Nevertheless, the organisers have called on the participants to attend in person if they wish to or can. Epidemiological status permitting, an informal social event will be held in Portorož as well as discussions for limited groups.

Publishers and other exhibitors will be presented online, whereas art exhibitions and other cultural satellite events will be held across the country this year as well as next year.

The ECM is held every four years. The coming iteration will be organised by the University of Primorska in cooperation with a number of institutions and organisations, including the Ljubljana and Maribor universities, the Jožef Stefan Institute (IJS) and the Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia.
