Because the existing faculty building is too small, the school cannot increase enrolment to meet growing demand for healthcare workers, said faculty dean Mateja Lorber.

The building is also in need of renovation so its educational and research activities can be carried out at a high level. It needs a modern simulated clinical environment where students could gain practical experience, she said.

In the first stage of the project an extension will be built to house lecture halls and staff facilities. In the second stage the oldest part of the building will be renovated and a clinical simulation centre set up.

"Investment in higher education is key for long-term economic and societal development because it promotes innovation, creates a skilled workforce and allows for progress in knowledge and technology," said University of Maribor Rector Zdravko Kačič.

"In the last few years we have been stressing the challenges in training staff in healthcare and medicine," said Minister Igor Papič.

"I am very glad we made a step forward and started these investment projects," he said, recalling similar investments launched at the University of Ljubljana and planned at the University of Primorska.
