Maribor University purchases land for medical school expansion
Maribor, 22 November - The University of Maribor has secured land to expand its Faculty of Medicine. It signed a contract on Thursday to purchase a 20,800 ms plot from the retailer Hofer not far from the existing faculty building.
The purchase agreement creates the conditions to begin the investment into expanding the Faculty of Medicine, the university said on Friday, adding that the plot is the only available buildable land in the vicinity of the existing faculty and the UKC Maribor hospital.
The faculty is located on the right bank of the Drava, just north of UKC Maribor, but at its existing location there is no room for expansion. The plot in question is east of UKC Maribor, across Titova Road.
The expansion of the faculty is much needed, the university said, adding that additional premises will allow them to increase enrolment and maintain the quality of the education process. This will also allow the university to introduce new study programmes.
The details on the construction are not yet known.
More than 1,000 students have already completed their studies at the Faculty of Medicine, which was founded in 2003. It offers degrees in general medicine and dental medicine and is in the process of accrediting a new study programme of pharmacy.
