Slovenia launches seven-year project to boost climate change resilience

Ljubljana, 31 January - Slovenia is launching a seven-year, EUR 27 million project to boost its resilience in the face of climate change. The EU-funded project dubbed Life4Adapt will see the Environment Agency set up a national centre for climate analysis and forecast providing detailed guidelines for adapting to climate change.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy said in a press release on Friday that EUR 14.2 million for the EUR 26.6 million project would come from EU funds. A part of Life Integrated Projects (Life IP), it will run until the end of January 2032.

A consortium of partners, led by the ministry, will conduct 14 pilot projects to produce results that will be used as models for the entire country in the future.

"Life4Adapt is a key step to a more systematic and strategic approach to climate resilience. It will allow better planning, coordination and implementation of adaptation measures at all levels of governance," the ministry said.

In the past, Slovenia has invested a lot in mitigating climate change effects, but not much attention has been paid to adapting, the press release added.

The partners will work closely with key stakeholders, from municipalities to the corporate sector and civil society, the ministry said.

The project partners include the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, natural parks Strunjan, Ljubljana Marshes, Goričko and the Triglav National Park.

The consortium features the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, represented by the Forest Service, the Association of Municipalities and Towns of Slovenia (SOS), the company ZaVita, National Institute of Biology and the Koper Science and Research Centre.

The project also includes the environmental association Focus, the Forestry Institute, the University of Ljubljana, the company Stritih, the Agricultural Institute, the CER Sustainable Business Network and the Water Agency.
